” But the Counselor, The Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name , will teach you all things and remind you of everything I have said to you. ” John 14:26
Q. What is the role of The Holy Spirit in your life ?
I love that The Holy Spirit is referred to as The Counselor, that he will give us counsel. What does this mean? He has the authority to give guidance, advise and help, to lead us into all knowledge of everything concerning Jesus and our lives lived in Him.
” And the Spirit of The LORD will rest on him- the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and fear of The LORD.” Isaiah 11:2
How fitting that He is also called the comforter. What an incredible thing to be able to rest in the knowledge that we have with us , every day Gods’ spirit to guide , teach , and reassure us .
I still remember vividly the day that this became a reality for me. I knew of The Holt Spirit , but coming from an extremely conservative church background , I didn’t truly understand , or KNOW Him and how He wanted to be an integral part of my life.
My husband and I had been going through some difficult times and we were experiencing an rather severe spiritual attack on our home and family. We sought counselling through a well known and respected Pastor and his wife. During our sessions , after getting to know us and our story, the Pastor asked us if we would truly like to know the Holy Spirit and have Him live within us.
” ………But you know Him , because He lives with you now and later will be in you .” John 14:17
We said yes and they laid hands on us and prayed a simple prayer. The earth didn’t move, nor did we break out in an unknown tongue, but…… We did leave that session feeling different. An overwhelming sense of peace and desire for more of Jesus and His word had washed over both of us, as soon as we arrived home I opened my Bible to John 14. It was as though the pages were alive , the words jumping out to meet me and a new understanding began to unfold..” He will teach you all things ” Our desire to worship intensified in a new, passionate and abandoned way, which was at odds with all that we were used to but we stepped out and followed The Holy Spirits leading. And what a journey it has been……and it continues.
He will stretch you , take you out of your comfort zones, reveal truths that you were once blind to , He will break your heart for what breaks His and place a new song within you , and He will give you PEACE.
” And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor , who will NEVER leave you. He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world at large cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognise him. But you do……..” John 14:16-17
” I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well ” Psalm 139:14
Q. What does this scripture mean to you?
To me this is one of the most beautiful verses in scripture. I close my eyes and picture myself out in the open , breeze blowing gently on my face, arms stretched high towards the heavens, standing in awe and worship of the one who made me so wonderfully. Totally abandoned to all that surrounds me and bathing in the knowledge that He knew me before I was born, that my days were set out in advance, my life’s journey was seen and known. That no matter what path I followed , He would be there right beside. When I wake each day He is with me, and His thoughts about me are so precious, I can’t even begin to count them , they are innumerable .
” Such knowledge is too wonderful, to great for me to understand ”
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and we are being beheld by almighty God our creator and He says of us that we are wondrously made. There are so many people that question their worth, that are listening to the world tell them that they are unlovely, not good enough. There is only one voice we need heed , when He gazes upon us, he sees His creation, His perfect handy work.
When we are able to rest in the knowledge of His thoughts about us then we can cast off the opinions of the world, and live in the confidence that we are beautiful, each and every one of us.
” Work willingly at whatever you do as though you were working for The Lord rather than for people. ” Colossians 3:23
Q. How can this verse help us in the tasks we face each day ?
Are you ever tempted to only do the minimum to get by, to find the quickest way, rather than the most thorough to finish a task ? Do you go above and beyond ? Are you able to apply yourself diligently to the tasks you have to, but don’t really want to do ? Are you always searching for the simplest way out ?
It’s easy to look at others performance and compare . Why should I do more than them, my effort is just as good, no one appreciates the work I do anyway!
As Christians we should be demonstrating an attitude of integrity in all that we do. We are to work willingly not apathetically . When we approach our job what ever that may be, with a positive, cheerful and eager manner, not only is our performance enhanced but it is actually more enjoyable.
If God were your boss, would you be turning up to work each day with a bad attitude, in a grumpy mood ? Somehow I think the answer would be ” no “.
Like it or not, our actions , where ever we go are a reflection of our values. So…..who do you go to work for each day? I think if we rem
ind ourselves of this verse , especially when we are suffering from ” the can’t be bothered s “, and let’s face it, we all do at some point in time, it will give us the extra motivation to be ” above and beyond ” people.
” Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as Christ forgave you ” Ephesians 4:32
Q. Why should we forgive others when we are wronged?
So much meaning in one word. One word that is central to so many issues in life. One word that causes so much angst for so many. One word in action that can change any course of events. So why is it that humanity struggles with forgiveness?
What does it literally mean to forgive ; to relinquish the feelings of anger and resentment towards someone, to pardon those who have caused us offence.
You’ve heard it said an eye for an eye, probably declared by one who is withholding forgiveness. It is a natural reaction to want justice for wrongdoing, and enacting it is an integral part of society.
When we extend a pardon to someone, when we let go of the wrong, it does not condone what they have done nor does it release them from the consequences of their actions. In actual fact, we are the ones who are released. The weight of harbouring, anger and resentment, the decaying power of bitterness, eats away at our own life, not that of the perpetrator.
“Live a life filled with love for others, following the example of Christ, who loved you and gave himself as a sacrifice to take away your sins.” 5:2
” get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of malicious behaviour.” 4:32
” You must display a new nature because you are a new person, created in God’s likeness…” 4:24
All that is within us will say ” no, I can’t forgive, it’s not fair, it’s not right “, the bigger the violation the more our inner self protests, the more there is to forgive, the harder it is. We can not do it in our own strength, we need an spiritual empowering..
” I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will give you mighty inner strength through his Holy Spirit. And I pray that Christ will be more and more at home in your hearts as you trust in him. May your roots go down deep into the soil of God’s marvelous love. And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high and how deep his love really is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is so great you will never fully understand it. Then you will be filled with the fullness of life and power that comes from God.” 3:16-19
We are asked to forgive as Christ forgave us , but He will give us the inner strength and power to do so, enriching our lives with peace and harmony.
Are you holding on to an offence or hurt, is there unforgiveness buried in your heart? Trust Him and let it go.
Q. How can you do better at loving others as Jesus has loved us ?
Some will say that love is a feeling, others ascribe that love is a decision . I say it is both. There are times when we are overwhelmed with and by love. It is spontaneous, a reaction to situation and circumstance, an emotional exchange between individuals alike. A returning of that which is lavished upon us. It can lead us to make both good and bad decisions, motivate us to great deeds or send us to the depths of despair.
Some situations in life call for us to deliberately choose to love, to love those in our life that have hurt or disappointed us, to love those who may not love in return.
When Jesus says, ” a new command I give you ” it is not for us to choose whom we will or will not love. Our love for one another is an action. It is in how we treat each other. Are we inclusive or exclusive , do we love the unlovely, are we known for unconditional acceptance…..love?
This kind of love, decision and emotion, extended to all in our world is an supernatural kind of love. In order to love as Christ loved us, we need Him. We can’t do it without Him dwelling in the centre of our being. He says that we ” must “. Sometimes it is easy and sometimes it seems impossible, this is when we draw on His strength and make the choice to love. He did it for us, we who were most undeserving. He made the ultimate sacrifice of love and gave His life.
We need to pray each and every day that He will give us the capacity to LOVE MUCH.
