‘ They dressed him in a purple robe and made a crown of long, sharp thorns and put it on His head. Then they saluted, yelling, ” Hail! King of the Jews!” And they beat him on the head with a stick, spit on him, and dropped to their knees in mock worship.’ Mark 15:16-19
Q. What motivates the mockers ? Are you ever tempted to mock Jesus ?
They dragged Jesus before a whole battalion of soldiers to mock and abuse him both verbally and physically . Why ? Why would anyone want to do this to another human being ? The mob , bully mentality continued onto the Roman authorities, spreading like a virus. One by one more people stepped in to join the brutalising of an innocent man, almost as if it were a sport. They mocked and humiliated Him until they were tired of their sick game.
I cannot fathom what their motivation must have been , it is foreign to me and my only conclusion is that the enemy of our souls was at the root of it all , spurring them along for his own evil purposes.
Isaiah foretold these events;
‘Who has believed our message? To whom will The Lord reveal His saving power? My servant grew up in the Lord’s presence like a tender green shoot , sprouting from a root in dry and arid sterile ground. There was nothing beautiful or majestic about his appearance, nothing to attract us to him. He was despised and rejected- a man of sorrows, acquainted with bitterest grief. We turned our backs on him and looked the other way when he went by. He was despised and we did not care. Yet it was our weaknesses he carried; it was our sorrows that weighed him down. And we thought his troubles were a punishment from God for his own sins! But he was wounded and crushed for our sins. He was beaten that we might have peace. He was whipped, and we were healed! ‘ Isaiah 53:1-5
Jesus’ tormentors were blinded by unbelief, lost in their ignorance. Unable to see that the very man they persecuted was indeed their Saviour.
May our eyes be open that we do not mock Him in looking the other way as He passes by, but instead , we stand up and follow after Him.

‘ They bound Jesus and took him to Pilate, the Roman governor. Pilate asked Jesus, ” Are you the King of the Jews?” Jesus replied, ” Yes, it is as you say.”
Mark 15:1-2
Q. How does your life show/or not show Jesus is King?
As I traverse this journey towards Easter a resounding theme is pressing upon my heart. Who do I kneel before?
I have had to ask myself many questions and delve deep into my life honestly looking at how I live………….
Is my faith honest and simple like that of a child,
Where have I placed importance, what do I treasure,
Do I give Him the best of my time,
Am I walking a life reflecting my beliefs,
Are my actions those of a thankful heart,
In all things do I lean on His strength,
Is He at the centre of my world,
Am I shining a light in my life that draws others to Him,
Do I allow Him to reign in and over my existence ,
Have I placed my foundations solidly on Him, the cornerstone,
Am I ready,
In the knowledge of His sacrifice do I bring to Him in worship my whole being,
Am I willing to be different,
Can I forgive,
Will I stand proud and tall, honouring Him ?
This journey has been one of reflection and repentance, forgiveness and choices and an encountering of Him.
Who do I kneel before?
I kneel before the King………….Jesus.

Then Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve disciples, went to the leading priests to arrange to betray Jesus to them. The leading priests were delighted when they heard why he had come, and they promised him a reward. So he began looking for the right time and place to betray Jesus. Mark 14:10-11
Q. For what reward do you betray Jesus ? What motives do you share with Judas ?
I don’t think any of us want to be likened to Judas! He was the one, the one that committed the ultimate betrayal……..for a bag of silver! No…….no, I’m not anything like Judas………Or am I ?
How is it that we could betray Jesus today, let alone have similar motives to Judas. I struggle with the whole concept, as to why Judas did what he did. To be that close in fellowship with Jesus, to sit under His teaching, to witness His compassion, seeing with his own eyes miracle after miracle…….to be in His presence, how could he?
I would never, of this I’m certain! ………….Or am I ?
What if I were to place the praise and acceptance of others above Him, compromising my convictions for the reward of worldly accolades, to chase after and desire approval and standing with man, above Him!
Every day His goodness and mercy is evident in my life, so why is it that I still seek after my own needs, striving for success apart from Him?
Could it be that the same desire which drove Judas to betrayal, is evident in our own lives today, subtly influencing our motives ?
In what form does your big bag of silver manifest itself today ? Self reflection can be a little tough, especially when upon inspection we find unexpected attitude and sin. How wonderful it is that His Grace never leaves us where it finds us, we can turn over our vanities and obsessions to Him.
” Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a right spirit within me. Do not banish me from your presence, and don’t take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation , make me willing to obey.” Psalm 52:10-12

imageDON’T DAB
Walk Towards Easter . 14.
During supper a woman came in with a beautiful jar of expensive perfume. She broke the seal and poured the perfume over His head. Mark 14:3
Q. What moves you about the response of the woman to Jesus ?
How do you show gratitude to Jesus?
This was no ordinary jar of perfume, it was pure and expensive, unopened. She had brought the very best. She didn’t just dab the perfume onto Jesus, she pored it over His head.
Some of those at the table were indignant. ” Why was this expensive perfume wasted?” they asked . Mark 14:4
This woman came to Jesus bringing the very best that she had, she didn’t grab a cheap bottle, an already opened bottle, but the finest. She gave all of herself . Jesus stated that she had actually anointed Him. She was not concerned with what others around the table thought and she endured their scolding. Her sole desire was to bring honour and to worship her Lord.
Do we bring the most excellent , the most estimable, the entirety of ourselves to the feet of Jesus in worship . Or are we withholding a portion of ourselves, keeping in reserve a fragment, the last piece holding us back from totally abandoning ourselves to worshipping our saviour?
” Leave her alone why berate her for doing such a good thing to me ?” Mark 14: 6
Let us not simply dab Jesus with our worship, but surrender our complete , unmitigated selves, pouring our worship over Jesus head, anointing Him with our praise.
Spending ones self on Jesus is never a waste, but ” a deed that will be talked about in our memory”. Mark 14:9

However, no one knows the day or the hour when these things will happen, not even the angels in heaven or the Son himself. Only the Father knows. And since you don’t know when they will happen, stay alert and keep watch.
Mark 13:32-33
Q. Are you ready for the return of Jesus ? How should this expectation impact on your life ?
If I were to be totally honest, the thought skipped through my mind, albeit briefly ,……” But I still have so much I want to do ! ” Upon realisation of my selfishness, I corrected my wrong thinking with another fleeting thought. ” But God , I still have so much I want to do for you !”
So I pondered on these musings of my mind for a time…….. I do want Jesus to return, I am waiting expectantly. And I am ready .
We are told to stay alert and keep watch because we do not know when all this will come to pass . So we have to keep on living our lives and following after God’s plan . It’s okay to have dreams and aspirations. God has placed them within us. He does have things He wants us to do.
“Therefore go and make disciples of all the nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.” Matthew 28:19
Jesus tells us in the parable of the Three Servants ( Matthew 25:14) that He expects us to use the gifts and talents He has given us, not to hide them away. Not to just sit and wait idly for His return.
” To those who use well what they are given, even more will be given , and they will have an abundance. ” Matthew 25:29
Yes, I’m ready and I am going to live expectantly, on the edge, following His leading and calling on my life, using my gifts and talents for His glory, all the while waiting and watching.
How about you?
