Walk Towards Easter .26.
‘ The leading priests and teachers of the religious law also mocked Jesus. ” He saved others,” they scoffed, ” but he can’t save himself! Let this messiah, this King of Israel , come down from the cross so we can see it and believe him!” Even the two criminals who were being crucified with Jesus ridiculed him.
Q. What is ironic about the mocking cries of the crowd?
To be involved in behaviour such as mockery, is unbecoming of any religious leader. I wonder if the people shouting actually listened to what they were saying, ” You saved others!” Should that not have been enough for them to see that Jesus was special, innocent. They witnessed His miracles and yet they still wanted more , for Him to prove Himself again. The irony is, that is exactly what He was accomplishing.
‘ When he sees all that is accomplished by his anguish, he will be satisfied. And because of what he has experienced, my righteous servant will make it possible for many to be counted righteous, for he will bear all their sins. I will give him the honours of one who is mighty and great, because he exposed himself to death. He was counted among those who were sinners…….” Isaiah 53:11-12
There will be times when you are the only one standing firm, holding fast to your principles, in the face of ridicule and torment and an overwhelming pressure to conform. Often our biggest critics will be those whom we thought were on the same page. Take heart, He knows the weight and He overcame it.
Walk Towards Easter .10.
As Jesus was walking through the Temple area, the leading priests, the teachers of religious law, and the other leaders came up to him. They demanded, ” By whose authority did you drive out the merchants from the Temple? Who gave you such authority ?” Mark 11:27-28
Q. Where does Jesus authority come from ? When do you question Jesus authority over your own life?
I find it hard to fathom as to why the religious leaders even considered it necessary to ask Jesus by whose authority He cleared the Temple. This was a House of Prayer and they had allowed it to become a market place seething with dishonesty. They were supposed to be leaders and representatives of Gods people in the community! Instead of listening to Jesus and following His example and teaching, they chose to question His just actions and by whom He had been given the authority.
Now He is far above any ruler or authority or power or leader or anything else in this world or the world to come. And God has put all things under the authority of Christ…… Ephesians 2:21-22
Jesus even stated , ” I have been given complete authority in heaven and on earth ….” Matthew 28:18
What does authority mean? It is the power to issue directives accompanied by the right to expect obedience! If we apply that to worldly principles in today’s society , it may evoke negative connotations and feelings. We seem to have an aversion to coming under authority and obedience.
But it so different with Jesus. He does not seek to forcefully rule over our lives……He gives us the choice. He does not seek to control and manipulate our lives…….He gives us the choice. Every time we question His plan and will for our lives, doubt the path He has laid out for us, disbelieve His goodness towards us, we are questioning His authority over our lives .
” For I know the plans I have for you,” says The Lord. ” They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.” Jeremiah 29:11
Obedience to Christ is not a burden, quite the contrary. It brings joy and fullness of life……if we would simply trust in Him.
